"I simply wanted to take a moment to mention how much I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED YOUR CLASS THESE PAST WEEKS; unfortunately after graduate school workshops, and teaching undergraduate workshops myself I found myself a bit disillusioned by the process on the whole, but the class structure that you utilized was, without question, ONE OF THE BEST THAT I HAVE EXPERIENCED, and I am confident that my work has improved through each session."
- Stacy D. Flood, 2011 ACT Intermediate Playwriting Student
So you’ve got a brilliant idea for your play, a stunning opening scene, and you’ve got this astonishing ending that will make everybody in the audience cry. Maybe you’ve got a couple scattered scenes in the middle, but what happens there might still be a little, well, mushy. The middle of your play can often be the most difficult. It’s the lengthiest part of your work, and where the most dramatic action needs to happen. It’s easy to lose momentum, or lose track of how to get to your ending. The exercises provided in this class will be focused on firming up that squishy middle—like literary Pilates for the core of your play.
The primary focus of the class will be advancing your current project through sharing and discussion of scenes of your own choosing. In addition, through selected readings and focused writing exercises, we’ll explore how to use givens, what if’s, reveals, and theatrical explosions in the middle of your play, to propel it through the middle and towards that astonishing conclusion. This intermediate class is the perfect opportunity to make headway on that play in progress, or jump into writing your next one.
