Short Stories Live: Holiday Stories
This afternoon of delightfully unconventional Christmas stories, poems, and musical cheer—an “antidotal” alternative to the usual holiday fare—veers between the evocative and the humorous, all delivered by some of Seattle’s favorite professional actors. Frank Corrado, Paul Dorpat, Randy Hoffmeyer, and Jean Sherrard read excerpts from holiday classics including Damon Runyon’s Dancing Dan’s Christmas, in which a trio of hoodlums gives the best Christmas gift ever; John Mortimer’s delightful Rumpole and Father Christmas (the ingenious portly barrister discovers that Santa isn’t quite what he seems); John Cheever’s darkly comic Christmas is a Sad Season for the Poor; and P.G. Wodehouse’s effervescently daffy Another Christmas Carol.

Short Stories Live: Fairy Tales
From the treasure trove of the world's greatest stories come tales of transformation and the re-imagining of the miracle of life. Seattle's favorite professional actors read "The Two Viziers" from Arabian Nights; the Russian fairy tale, "The Magic Ring"; and ancient India's "Lavana".

Short Stories Live: Across The Continent
It was a time (between the Franco-Prussian War and World War I) and a place (Europe) of enormous change-in history, in literature, and maybe in the European soul itself. In this program, professional actors read from some of the era's signature short stories, including the great Guy de Maupassant's "Toine" and "Rosalie Prudent"; Anton Chekhov's "Romance with Double Bass" and "Vanka"; and Isak Dinesin's "The Heroine."

Short Stories Live: Voices of Young Women
The song says it's a man's world, but these short stories, about young women surviving in a male world, prove otherwise. Works on the program include Joyce Carol Oates' "Upholstery," about a teenager who finds herself helplessly attracted to a dangerous older man; Mary McCarthy's autobiographical "Cye," about her Catholic upbringing; and Sarah Orne Jewett's "A White Heron," about a young city girl who discovers her passion for country life and her love for the animals that inhabit it.

Short Stories Live: The Jewish Imagination, Part 2
The 2011-12 season premiere of Short Stories Live picks up where last year's left off, with more excerpts from classic short stories capturing the Jewish imagination. Some of Seattle's favorite actors will read from works including the part-fable, part-fantasy "The Angel Levine," which explores Bernard Malamud's signature theme of brotherhood; "Getzel the Monkey," by the prolific Polish writer Isaac Bashevis Singer, whose recurring theme is the rocky and often unsuccessful transition from old to new; and "For the Relief of Unbearable Urges" by Nathan Englander, selected as one of "20 Writers for the 21st Century" by The New Yorker. Directed by Christine Sumption.

Short Stories Live: The Comic Criminal
Comedy certainly isn't a crime - although these readings might assault your funny bone. In this program directed by Anita Montgomery, some of Seattle's favorite actors will read excerpts from classic comic short stories: "Ser Cepparello" and "Masetto da Lamporecchio" from The Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio; "The Famous Poll at Jody's Bar" by Ellen Gilchrist; James Thurber's "The Catbird Seat," and "Stranger than Fiction" by John Mortimer.
