Think of it as NPR’s Selected Shorts, Seattle style: ACT Artistic Director Kurt Beattie selects compelling short stories based on a common theme; then local actors bring the stories to life during readings at Town Hall.

Short Stories Live: (Another) Rogue's Christmas

The return of our afternoon of delightfully unconventional holiday stories, poems, and musical cheer-a sweetly antidotal alternative to the usual 'tis-the-season'al fare-boasts some of the Northwest's favorite professional actors: Frank Corrado, Megan Cole, historian/raconteur Paul Dorpat, and Jean Sherrard (who also returns to direct). Stories include Chekhov's The Shoemaker and the Devil, in which an impoverished shoemaker sells his soul to the devil and, after a harrowing night, realizes his life ain't so bad after all (think It's a Wonderful Life meets Heaven Can Wait); Jane Gardam's The Zoo at Christmas, a brilliantly hilarious riff on Hardy's nativity-themed poem The Oxen (imagine philosophical zoo animals escaping their cages on Christmas Eve); Christmas by Injunction, O. Henry's very funny Western tale with an effervescent ending; and the classic Reginald's Christmas Revel, by Saki. Homegrown music from Pineola-Leslie Braly, John Owen, and Josh Woods-warms up the afternoon. Presented by Town Hall and ACT Theatre.

Short Stories Live is a partnership between ACT and Town Hall Seattle.

The Central Heating Lab at ACT

ACT's innovative Central Heating Lab initiative is devoted to nurturing and supporting new works, new talent, and local artists spanning not only theatre, but also cabaret, music, dance, spoken word, film, and performance and visual art. Uniquely positioned to provide the space and resources to the development of new projects in a collaborative environment, ACT partners with emerging and seasoned local artists, and gives them the heat, sustenance and pressure required to experiment, grow and transform their work and reach new audiences. Programs are added throughout the year.
