Deeley and Kate appear to be quietly content. Until long-lost Anna arrives.
Pinter's haunting play, first produced in 1971, delves deeply into realms that had been implied in previous works and which would be further pursued in plays to come: the elusiveness and unreliability of memory; the illusions which allow us to get through the day but which haunt our nights; the compelling need for psychological dominance and control and the compelling fear of losing it. The play is also a wistful and very witty post-war vision of an edenic England which may only have existed in an imagination as fertile as Harold Pinter's. ACT last produced Old Times some forty years ago.
