Audition Information
ACT - A Contemporary Theatre is a member of the League of Resident Theatres (LORT) and a union house, operating under agreements with Actors' Equity Association (AEA), the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), and the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers (SSD&C).
General Auditions for Equity Actors
ACT holds two days of auditions annually for local Equity actors, usually sometime between December 1 and February 28. General auditions for the 2009 Season will be on Monday, February 9 and Tuesday February 10, 10:00 am – 1:30 pm and 2:30 pm to 6:00 pm each day. An accompanist will be provided for the afternoon session on the 9th and the morning session on the 10th.
Please prepare two short, contrasting monologues: either one classical/one contemporary, or two contrasting contemporary pieces. A song is optional, but if you choose to sing please be sure you’re signing up for a time that the pianist is available as noted above.
To schedule an audition, please sign up in advance at the ACT reception desk, 700 Union Street, Seattle, Monday through Friday between 9 am and 5 pm. You may drop off your headshot and resume at that time, or bring it on the day along with your AEA membership card or proof of EMC status.
Equity members from outside Seattle may request an individual audition at the theatre if they are visiting the city. Please contact Margaret Layne, Casting Director, by phone at (206) 292-7660 ext. 1226, or via e-mail at laynem@acttheatre.org.
Out of town general auditions are scheduled annually in office and/or liaison cities per the LORT-Equity contract, and are announced on the Actors' Equity Association website.
General Auditions for Non-Union Actors
ACT holds general auditions for non-union actors on the first Thursday of alternate months from 10:30 am to 12:00 noon. (Please note that because the Theatre Puget Sound Unified Auditions are scheduled for late February, our next First Thursday will be on April 2nd, 2009.)
We see the first 30 non-Equity actors to sign up, 10 auditioners per half-hour. Only one audition is allowed in a six-month period unless requested by ACT's Casting Director. No-shows will not be permitted to reschedule until the next six-month block, so make sure to keep your appointment or notify ACT in advance if you are unable to do so.
To participate, you should schedule an appointment in person, in advance, by coming to our Ticket Office lobby at 700 Union Street. An appointment book is available at the reception desk during regular business hours (9am 5 pm, Monday thru Friday). Just pencil in your name and contact information in your preferred audition time period.
Audition appointments are three minutes long; presentations should not exceed two and a half (2.5) minutes. Please prepare two short and contrasting monologues: either one classical and one contemporary or two contrasting contemporary pieces. No accompanist will be present, but auditioners who wish to sing are welcome to perform a cappella.
Youth Actor Opportunities
Because of the nature of ACT's repertory, opportunities for youth actors in the subscription season are rare. However, seven roles for non-union Youth Actors (under 14) are available annually in ACT's holiday production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL, a commitment lasting from the beginning of November through Christmas Eve. An open call audition for these roles is held in late September or early October. Additional information will be posted to this website, as well as on the audition boards at Theatre Puget Sound.
